As a global technology and computing giant, Apple in Italy is continuously expanding and in need of a forward-thinking legal team to match its pioneering vision. It is here where the legal team fit in perfectly; led by corporate legal counsel Alejandro Bes Garralaga, the Apple legal team is a lean department that continuously strive to be a reliable business partner ‘focusing on the key issues that help move the business forward’. Dedicated to the community, the team has been behind rolling out the iOS developer academy and iOS Foundation Program in parallel with more than five universities in Naples and the Campania region. This project allows students – for the first time in Europe – to gain practical skills and training on developing apps for iOS, focusing on software development, start-up creation and app design with an emphasis on creativity and collaboration to empower and equip students to develop the skills needed to succeed. Faced with constant regulatory challenges the legal team work hard to ensure that the company complies with the applicable regulations, which Garralaga notes ‘can be significantly difficult compared to other regions’. On staying abreast of these issues Garralaga says: ‘We try to overcome this by working closely with our governmental affairs team, tackling issues before they become problems’.
