Banco BPM was formed in 2016 in one of the most high profile events of the Italian financial business landscape in recent years. The result of a merger between the two major Italian banks Banco Popolare and Banca Popolare di Milano, Banco BPM began operations in January 2017 and is now the third largest bank in Italy when measured by total assets. The bank’s legal team has already been busy in support of an active transactional strategy. Among other salient deals, in August 2017 Banco BPM agreed to sell its asset management business Aletti Gestielle SGR to Anima Holding in a $1.3bn transaction. The legal support to this complex deal, which will see Banco BPM retain around a ten percent stake in Aletti Gestielle SGR, was significant and highlights the bank’s legal team’s abilities in a business context.
