The Barclay’s legal team covering Italy comprises of lawyers based in both London and Milan, with previous experience in international and Italian law firms. The legal team provides advisory and transactional legal coverage for Barclays Italian franchise, operating both on a cross-border and an in-country basis covering corporate and investment banking (CIB) and the Italian legal retail business. The team has multidisciplinary expertise in all aspects of banking and finance covering a wide range of products and practice areas including derivatives, capital markets, banking, trade and working capitals, together with strong technical skills and a deep knowledge of the business platforms and banking financial markets. The team is responsible for law firm relationship management and is actively involved in associations and industry-wide initiatives both at an Italian and international level. The legal team is led by head of legal Francesca Elisabetta Spinelli Barrile who holds responsibilities across all lines of the business for the entire Italian franchise. Within the team, ECM and M&A advisory is covered by legal counsel, Tommaso Lupo, who has been involved with the team in a number of regulatory and strategic projects for the bank. In the past two years, in light of the changing political and regulatory landscape, the team has been actively involved in a number of strategic and complex regulatory projects, in addition to the business transactional and advisory legal activities. Most recently the legal team has been involved in the corporate reorganisation of Barclays Group in the context of Brexit, ensuring that the business is set up to continue to deliver for their clients. The team also provides legal advisory and transactional coverage to the Italian corporate and investment bank business for Barclays and is involved both in the structuring and execution phase, in the main transactions which have contributed to consolidating the presence of Barclays as one of the main market players in Italy. The team culture is inspired by Barclays’ values of respect, integrity, service, excellence and stewardship. ‘The team supports Barclays’ firm wide diversity and inclusion strategy, in which the unique talents of each lawyer contribute directly to the firm’s success, and in which individual characteristics are equally respected and valued’, says Spinelli Barrile.
