International courier services provider FedEx is supported in the Southern European region by a legal team made up of eight lawyers and one executive assistant based in Italy, three in Spain and one in Turkey. Over the years the team has grown rapidly through hiring a mix of junior and more experienced lawyers all coming from multinational companies or leading law firms. Managing director of legal, Alessandro Lega joined FedEx in 2012 and became managing director of the Southern Europe Team in 2016, following the acquisition of TNT by FedEx, when he was entrusted to set up a dedicated legal team to cover the Southern Europe region, characterised by a diverse range of cultures, languages and legal systems. With the acquisition of TNT, FedEx Express in Italy has gone through dramatic changes due to the substantial increase of the size of its operations in the country. The Italian legal team has subsequently had to adapt to these changes, having to face substantial organisational challenges to ensure a smooth integration of processes and a cultural alignment of the FedEx Express and TNT legal departments. The team ethos is summed up by ‘people, service and profit’ according to Lega who says this is also the FedEx philosophy across the globe that led the FedEx Group to be listed among the most admired companies to work for. ‘You need brilliant and committed people to provide excellent service to customers, necessary to produce the profit required to grow and to respond to the expectations of the investors’, explains Lega. The legal team has also been integral to the integration of the sales workforce and the review of the two companies’ footprint by streamlining the number of stations, vehicles, and equipment to eliminate natural duplication in the territory.
