Siram by Veolia holds a world-leading position in the optimised management of environmental services. Today it is present in five continents and has achieved over 100 years of operation in Italy in the area of energy performance, water treatment and disposal of special waste. The legal team is made up of 12 professionals, and one executive assistant and includes senior legal counsel of the litigation department Irina Clementi and senior legal counsel corporate and commercial contracts department Viviana Russo. The legal team operates via a flexible deployment of the team to provide for business needs and make best use of the legal specialists within the team. The team is described by as, ‘a problem-solving, agile and responsible team’ by group general counsel Francesco Marzari. ‘Problem solving is something we do every day. In doing this, collaborating across company divisions, we need to be agile and adaptable but also curious and critical analysers. In a complex world of accelerating change, these are skills and also a mind-set lawyers need in order to deal with legal issues. We cultivate these skills daily, expanding legal skills and developing soft skills through training events and courses’, adds Marzari. The legal team has worked on several cases of significance, most recently facilitating a major case before an administrative judge where they were at the forefront of negotiating and finalising three energy performance contracts of a value of €450m.
