How do you motivate and manage the other members of your legal team well?

Communication and setting realistic goals. I think communication is probably the key for any successful manager. Giving instructions and explaining situations for everyone to understand but also listening intently and reacting to the ideas and thoughts of the team. It’s never a one man show and I am just one among many. If the team understands you, they will have an easier time to follow you which in turn makes it easier for me to manage them will.
Setting realistic goals is also key for keeping motivation up. Realistic goals lead to feelings of success and everyone in a professional environment likes success and is motivated by it.

What is a cause, business-related or otherwise, that you are passionate about, and why?

Sustainability and ESG efforts. While certain areas run danger of overregulation, I do feel that doing business in a sustainable manner and introducing ESG initiatives into corporate life are investments into the future which will pay off eventually. Employees will be more satisfied, business partners will have a favorable view and society as a whole will ultimately benefit.

Are the effects of AI on the legal world overplayed, or underplayed?

Both. Overplayed in the sense that AI may replace the skillset of academically educated, trained and experienced legal professionals. While oftentimes not associated with the legal profession, creative thinking and empathy are critical skills for a corporate lawyer which will not be replaceable by AI. Underplayed in the sense that AI may only be a temporary fad and go away before long. It is here to stay and it is up to each of us individually to make use of its possibilities in our professional life.
