Leticia Lizardo
Head of legal office | Luxembourg Institute of Health
First, can you please give us an idea of the sort of work your team has done recently?
The year 2023 marked the beginning of a new professional challenge for me. After having successfully set up the legal and compliance department of my previous employer, I joined the Luxembourg Institute of Health and initiated a significant reorganisation of its legal office. This started with a thorough review of the existing processes and a reassessment of the way in which we could deliver our services. A key element allowing us to operate constant improvements was the introduction of digital tools enabling real-time monitoring of our performance and of our impact on the operations of our internal clients.
What particular industry trends are you seeing in the legal sector in Luxembourg?
Over the past years, Luxembourg has been working on reducing its reliance on the financial services industry. In this context, one of the notable developments that have marked this period was a boost in research and innovation activities, in particular in the biomedical field. Another important trend to be followed in the research field is the generalisation of AI’s use, which raises a significant number of legal issues. However, Luxembourg based law firms have still some catching up to do with respect to tailoring their services to this new trend.
What is a cause, business related or otherwise, that you care about, and why?
The importance of biomedical research has been highlighted by the pandemic and its aftermath. This is an extremely relevant and impactful field. I feel privileged that through my work, I can advance the Institute’s mission to translate the results of biomedical research into tangible outcomes for patients.
