First, can you please give us an idea of the sort of work your team has done recently?
We have been working on building long-term strategic partnerships and alliances with new partners in the Middle East and Asia to combine our strengths, resources, perspectives, knowledge, complementary expertise, technology and intellectual property, networks and reach to effectively solve common challenges and seize new opportunities. We have also entered into and monitored joint ventures with partners in the United States and Africa to develop innovative experiences while leveraging each other’s strengths and resources.
To this end, I have worked in close collaboration with the other members of the group executive committee and the creative team, to support with the various actions, mainly by proposing the most appropriate approaches and securing them from a legal (and overall) perspective, including managing both our and our partners’ expectations, and mitigating risks.
What particular industry trends are you seeing in the legal sector in Luxembourg?
In the current global geopolitical context, the entire legal profession must be even more diligent and attentive to the legal and regulatory requirements in terms of compliance, anti-money laundering and counter terrorist financing. The risk and governance strategies have to be improved accordingly.
Services have become more sophisticated and the speed at which those services are delivered has increased. In this context, the legal profession is investing in technology to meet client needs and reduce the pressure on costs.
The role of artificial intelligence (AI) is growing as a support tool to retrieve and leverage on information which is relevant to prepare legal documentation and legal advice, and to generate first drafts of legal documents. In this context, the legal and regulatory landscape is evolving to take into account the need for ethical considerations, and data privacy protection of intellectual property rights.
What is a cause, business related or otherwise, that you care about, and why?
We all know that we face major challenges in today’s world: climate change, poverty, and inequality. The overall objective of the 17 sustainable development goals (SDGs) adopted by the United Nations is to create a better world, and a better life for all, through sustainable (economic, environmental, and social) development, with the aim of ending poverty and hunger, realising the human rights of all, protecting the most vulnerable children, and ensuring the lasting protection of the planet and its natural resources.
I recognise the importance of sustainability as a strategic competitive factor. Many of the SDGs can be achieved through ESG practices (such as reducing carbon emissions, improving working conditions, and promoting diversity and inclusion), and ESG investing can help to accelerate the achievement of the SDGs.
In our day-to-day business, we ensure the implementation of ESG considerations and SDGs, through environmentally sustainable and responsible business practices that our group undertakes to mitigate our negative impact on the environment while promoting inclusive and sustainable economic growth, productive employment, and decent work for all. With the opportunity to build on our existing experience and expertise, we focus on partnerships for sustainable impact, by assessing the compatibility of our own and our partners’ strategic objectives, culture, and values, also taking into account our partners’ financial stability, reputation, and track record.
