What are the projects that you are most proud of working on over the past 12 months?

The renegotiation of the company’s debt and related issuance of securities, significantly reducing the company’s debt load and cash interest expense.

How do you approach managing legal aspects during periods of instability or crisis to ensure the organisation’s resilience?

The Altisource law department takes a strategic approach to risk management. On a quarterly basis we review existing and potentially emerging risks to the company and adjust our policies and controls as needed to address the company’s changing risk profile. A priority is placed on communication and transparency within the company and the law department to manage the company’s risk profile and business opportunities in periods of instability or crisis.

Have you had any experiences during your career as a lawyer that stand out as particularly unique or interesting?

Developing and executing an international M&A strategy to help a company to realise its strategic goals.

What do you think are the most important attributes for a modern in-house counsel to possess?

The ability to effectively manage multiple contributors and workstreams in multiple projects at any given time. Understanding the business and associated risks of your employer, and the ability to partner across the business and corporate functions to support your employer.

Based on your experiences in the past year, are there any trends in the legal or business world that you are keeping an eye on that you think other in-house lawyers should be mindful of?

Appropriately integrating and leveraging artificial intelligence in legal department operations and the provision of legal services will be important in increasing efficiency and quality of services provided. In-house counsel should understand how its business and external service providers are utilising artificial intelligence in the delivery of services.
