What are the projects that you are most proud of working on over the past 12 months?

Over the past 12 months, I’m most proud of spearheading a project to streamline and standardise our internal legal procedures and structure. This initiative involved creating a more efficient workflow, clarifying roles, standardisation, and improving expectation and communication between the legal team and other departments to increase efficiency. By automating certain processes and establishing clearer guidelines, we’ve reduced turnaround times and minimised errors.
Have you had any experiences during your career as a lawyer that stand out as particularly unique or interesting?

One experience that stands out was during a cross-border contract negotiation for a major transport project. The complexity arose from the varying legal frameworks and regulatory requirements in different jurisdictions. The challenge was to harmonise these requirements while maintaining the interests of our company. Successfully navigating these negotiations not only deepened my understanding of international law, but also underscored the importance of meticulous contract drafting and risk management.
What do you think sets you apart from other in-house counsel?

One of my key strengths is my ability to integrate legal expertise with a profound understanding of the transportation sector’s operational dynamics. Alongside my thorough knowledge of regulatory frameworks, I collaborate closely with cross-functional teams, including operations and IT, to deliver practical, business-oriented legal solutions. This collaborative approach enables me to anticipate challenges and provide solutions that align with the company’s strategic goals.
What do you think are the most important attributes for a modern in-house counsel to possess?

For an in-house counsel, possessing strong business acumen is vital, as it ensures that legal advice aligns with the company’s broader strategy. Adaptability is equally important, particularly in rapidly evolving industries, making it essential to stay informed about legal and regulatory changes. Effective communication skills are necessary to convey complex legal concepts clearly and accessibly to non-legal teams. Additionally, a solid grasp of risk management is crucial for identifying and mitigating potential issues while still fostering business growth.
