Team size: Three
What are the projects that you are most proud of working on over the past 12 months?
The project I was most proud of was developing the Syniverse Generative AI in the Workplace Policy and working with colleagues in Technology and Security to implement an AI Assessment team that reviews and approves the deploying of AI across our business. Working with colleagues from different functions in a team and bringing my legal and privacy skills to the team is what makes working in house as a lawyer so interesting.
What do you think are the most important attributes for a modern in-house counsel to possess?
Obviously (and the relatively easy part) is to know the law. The hard part is to understand your client’s business (especially when it is in the technology sphere) and work collaboratively and advise your client on how to achieve their objectives in a compliant and risk acceptable manner. Easier said than done…
Based on your experiences in the past year, are there any trends in the legal or business world that you are keeping an eye on, of which you think other in-house lawyers should be mindful?
I think there has been a lot of hype over the last 18 to 24 months around AI. However, in the coming few years, we will really see how AI is implemented in businesses, and in legal teams. So, educating yourself on what AI is and what it can do, the risks but also the benefits, and how to how to use it safely, will be paramount for future in-house lawyers. It’s not going to go away: you need to understand and embrace technology.
