Could you share an example of a time when you came up with an innovation that improved how your legal team works and did not come at a large expense?

A set of procurement contract templates was established across all countries in the Asia Pacific region, drafted under the understanding and application of both common and civil laws. The templates encompass various procurement categories, including product purchases, general services, construction works, recruitment services, transportation services, and others.

Detailed instructions and a user manual were created for the teams to facilitate their understanding and use of the templates. In addition, training sessions were conducted across the regions to enhance the users’ understanding of contracts. These training sessions covered the entire process flow of contract review, emphasising collaboration and distinct roles and responsibilities of the procurement team and the legal counsel.

As we enter the next decade, what skills will a corporate legal team need to succeed in the modern in-house industry?

In today’s digital landscape, numerous business operations are undergoing digitalisation, resulting in heavy reliance on IT and OT (operational technology). Consequently, corporate counsel must possess IT and OT-related knowledge and enhance their literacy. The ever-present threat of cyberattacks and hacking necessitates in-house lawyers to possess the required skills and knowledge to collaborate effectively with cybersecurity experts. This collaboration is crucial for establishing a robust digital framework to safeguard a company’s interests. Additionally, corporate counsel should possess detailed knowledge of handling personal data breaches to mitigate legal and reputational risks. Understanding legal requirements and best practices associated with data protection enables effective navigation of data breach incidents while ensuring compliance with applicable laws and regulations.

How do you see the general counsel role evolving in Malaysia over the next five-ten years?

In recent times, there has been a notable shift in the role of in-house legal professionals within organisations. Traditionally seen as hindrances, legal departments are now recognised as valuable contributors to the overall success of a business. The general counsel’s role will continue to evolve from contract reviewers to strategic players who actively support and align with stakeholders. They provide legal guidance, conduct risk assessments, and offer strategic advice across departments. This involvement in high-level decision-making ensures the integration of legal considerations, leading to minimised risks, maximised opportunities, and a culture of compliance and ethical conduct throughout the organisation.
