What are some of the legal challenges that the media industry faced during the ongoing pandemic?
The movie exhibition industry, particularly cinemas, suffered deeply due to the pandemic. Closure mandates were followed by strict limitations once the cinemas reopened, some of which were social distancing, prohibitions on the sale of food and beverage and others. One of the more notable issues was the lack of blockbuster content. Litigation has also taken a much bigger role in our day-to-day.
In what ways do you see the in-house legal role evolving in your region over the next few years?
In-house lawyers should focus on ESG. I believe that in the next few years companies will have to periodically disclose their commitment to ESG factors, which will inevitably become influential metrics for the markets to decide which companies to invest in, to partner with or to contract. The same goes for all other stakeholders: employees, clients, authorities, communities, and the like. Companies that do not take an active role in improving the world we live in will become outcasts.
What are the most significant cases or transactions that your legal team has recently been involved in?
We successfully restructured the company’s financial debt, which was one of the most significant and challenging transactions for the team.
