Could you share an example of a time when you came up with an innovation that improved how your legal team works and did not come at a large expense?
In 2017, I designed and launched a contract lifecycle management process. We automated the drafting of contracts from our ERP system and integrated a digital signature platform – DocuSign. This reduced risks associated with unsigned or incomplete contracts and reduced supply costs and storage needs. It also improved our time management and efficiency by streamlining contract administration and reducing the legal team’s workload.
What are some of the main trends impacting the industry sector you work in in Mexico?
In the construction industry, there are discernible trends in the adoption of novel construction technologies, sustainability practices and the creation of more efficient spaces – physical and economic. This presents a challenge for legal professionals, as we must strive to achieve the seamless integration of these trends in each project. As general counsel, we are tasked with leveraging our business acumen, interpersonal skills, and outside-the-box thinking to become catalysts for change. Our role is to ensure our organisation has a meaningful impact on people, profitability, and the planet.
What measures has your company taken to embed sustainability practices into its core business operations, and how does the role of the general counsel contribute to driving and ensuring sustainable practices within the company?
At GAYA, maintaining a constant balance between planet, people and profitability is a top priority, enabling the creation of long-term, lasting value. Accordingly, we conducted a “Dual Materiality (Impact/Financial) Study” to identify the strategic issues that justify our concentrated efforts to achieve sustainable development. I have chosen to take on a prominent sponsorship role. By leading by example through the active participation of senior management, the implementation of this effort becomes considerably more feasible. At the same time, we must comply daily with the highest regulatory standards and certifications. Therefore, the legal department must ensure that we possess all the resources necessary to operate sustainably on a regular basis.
How do you prioritise diversity and inclusion within your legal department, and what initiatives have you implemented to foster a more inclusive and equitable work environment?
The historical circumstances within which I have evolved have enhanced my awareness and sensitivity to issues of diversity, equity, and inclusion. I aim to foster a culture of excellence, where working conditions are characterised by equality and adaptability to the individual circumstances of each team member. Through this approach, I have been able to promote empathy within the team and cultivate their dedication to exceeding the goals we have set for ourselves.
Given the uncertain and constantly changing environments in which we operate, our primary focus must be on providing optimal conditions that facilitate a harmonious balance between work and personal life within a pleasant environment. In this environment, the person and the quality of their work take precedence over any other distinction.
