Could you share an example of a time when you came up with an innovation that improved how your legal team works and did not come at a large expense?

Despite being classified as a corporate transactional lawyer, my profile carries significant regulatory weight. I prioritise safeguarding my client’s legal compliance across various areas. To achieve this, I have implemented a procedural scheme that ensures the company’s legal compliance, providing the lowest risk for the company. By implementing a structured and strategic approach, I was able to improve how my legal team works without incurring significant expenses.

Here are some examples of the procedures I implemented: Regular compliance audits — to maintain a proactive approach, I established a system of regular compliance audits. These audits involved reviewing the company’s operations, policies, and practices to identify potential compliance gaps or risks. By conducting these audits on a scheduled basis, we could address issues promptly, minimising the risk of legal violations. Streamlined document templates — to optimise efficiency and minimise costs, I implemented multiple digital tools reflecting greater efficiency in internal and external operations. A few examples are developing digital signature platforms and creating standardised document templates for recurring legal needs (NDAs, employment agreements, and other essential legal documents). In general, these templates are customisable, ensuring they meet the specific requirements of each transaction while reducing the time and effort required to draft new documents from scratch. Cloud-based system — Having all documents digitised in the cloud helps to make document review and access easier while safeguarding the confidentiality of the information with data encryption tools. In addition to being very outdated, companies that keep physical files of their legal documents promote environmental damage.

These innovations did not come at a significant expense but focused on streamlining processes, empowering the teams, and leveraging external expertise when necessary. Ultimately, the goal is to provide practical legal guidance while supporting the fast-paced growth of the startup.

Can you foresee any key developments to the way general counsel work over the next five years?

Yes, digitalisation and automation are much closer than we think. For this reason, I have decided to pursue an LLM in Artificial Intelligence abroad. It will undoubtedly equip me with valuable knowledge and skills to address the emerging legal challenges of the digital age. As technology advances rapidly, it becomes crucial for lawyers to stay ahead of the curve and understand AI’s legal implications and intricacies.

Artificial Intelligence in the real estate market comes to innovate, solve problems through automation, predict market trends, facilitate real estate search, reduce the workload of company personnel, and protect clients from fraudulent transactions.

How do you prioritise diversity and inclusion within your legal department, and what initiatives have you implemented to foster a more inclusive and equitable work environment?

As the head of the legal department, my responsibilities encompass developing, implementing, and reviewing internal policies and guidelines for the Company’s workforce. Through these initiatives, I have made a positive impact on promoting fair and equitable working conditions for employees, as well as introducing innovative practices that foster the professional growth of all individuals, with a particular focus on women, both current and prospective members of the Flat team.

For instance, we have implemented enhanced maternity leave policies that go beyond the legal requirements in Mexico, providing an additional month of leave along with all the corresponding benefits mandated by law. Moreover, recognizing that talent can emerge from diverse backgrounds, we embrace a flexible work culture that includes remote work options. This approach facilitates employment for those needing more reliable transportation or not near our physical offices. Furthermore, we have established internal policies to safeguard all employees’ physical, emotional, and psychological well-being.

These efforts collectively create an inclusive and supportive work environment where individuals can thrive and achieve their full potential.
