Could you share an example of a time when you came up with an innovation that improved how your legal team works and did not come at a large expense?
Using methodologies such as problem-solving and the toyota production system has helped my team and I to operate as a business unit where all the members involved in the legal team take care of and review each process in which we are involved. Once the process is reviewed, we must find opportunities, fix them, and deliver the best legal product to our internal and external clients. Training my team in this type of methodology is not expensive, but the outcome has saved a lot of money.
Can you foresee any key developments to the way general counsel work over the next five years?
ESG has been and continues to be an area where all lawyers must be involved. Environmental matters are today considered a priority in our world, and it is our responsibility to comply with all the regulations. Also, to provide new generations with tools that let the businesses continue to be sustainable. Also, it is essential to provide policies that can maintain robust corporate governance and keep all employees working in a safe and institutional environment.
Today, we are surrounded by devices that make our work easier, but we need to be very careful in how to use them. For example, now we can close deals using Teams, zoom, and other similar tools; however, the legal department’s job is to make sure everything that happens through these platforms is legal and safe.
Currently, general counsel are involved in several decisions and transactions. For that reason, we must learn about the industries and the business in which we are in charge. GCs are not only to fight or defend from illegalities but now we support and participate with our CEO or CFO in the decision-making.
What measures has your company taken to embed sustainability practices into its core business operations, and how does the role of the general counsel contribute to driving and ensuring sustainable practices within the company?
Our company has created diverse committees which take care of practices within the organisation. For example, our Ethics Code regulates the conduct of the individuals in our company, and the job of the Ethics Committee is to review and implement tools to help people learn about what they can or cannot do according to such code. If any conduct in such code is violated, the members of such committee, including the general counsel, must review the case, evaluate it, and solve it according to such code. This code is part of the company’s culture and supports all actions towards sustainability.
Our job as general counsel is to make sure all regulations are followed. As I mentioned before, compliance with a diversity of laws allows the company to continue to grow and make its people perform their job in a safe environment.
What is a cause, business-related or otherwise, you are passionate about, and why?
I love justice, law, and the company I work for. Therefore, I do the best job, with the best quality, and always think of our clients. It is, for me, the best reward to have all parties involved happy with the outcome and protected in case of an eventuality. Always going the extra mile is how my team and I try to perform our duty.
