How do you approach managing legal aspects during periods of instability or crises, and how legal strategy align with the broader business strategy to ensure the organisation’s resilience? 

First, you must ensure that business is not interrupted, maintaining daily operations related to contracts, permits associated with manufacturing, logistics and sales. Another key point during periods of crisis or instability is adaptability to adverse situations. Every crisis brings opportunities, and it is important for every legal department to be prepared to take advantage of those opportunities and, make the best of the resources available. Flexibility is important to adapt to the new workload and environment. This approach and the way we collaborate help enhance the company’s value and ensure resilience. 

How can general counsel foster a corporate culture that supports ESG principles and compliance across all levels of the organisation? 

Sustainability issues are creating a complex set of challenges for law departments. As such, they should identify and prioritise important areas of focus: environmental, social and governance. In my opinion, the efficacy of legal teams relies on additional in-house regulatory and ESG compliance expertise across all levels of the organisation. While this shift will affect most business functions, law departments are likely to play a key role, primarily focusing on compliance and risk management and their involvement in a broad range of challenges that are connected to sustainability. 

How do you manage and motivate your legal team to ensure high performance and professional growth?  

Professional growth is achieved by working on various issues that, while legal, also impact the business and projects within the organisation. This approach ensures we are involved not only in legal work but also in business decisions. Creating a dynamic non-routine environment fosters high performance in our roles, as each day brings new challenges and opportunities for improvement. As legal advisors, our goal is to enhance efficiency through continuous improvement. Legal engineering, which involves mitigation risks and devising solutions for the organisation, challenges both personal and professional growth, emphasising that there is no single correct answer but rather the most suitable one for each situation.
