How do you approach managing legal aspects during periods of instability or crises, and how does your legal strategy align with the broader business strategy to ensure the organisation’s resilience? 

As General Counsel of an asset manager in the hotel industry, focusing on the luxury and ultra-luxury segments, my legal approach revolves around proactive risk management, agile response protocols, and strategic alignment with the broader business strategy to enhance organisational resilience.  

First and foremost, I prioritise scenario planning and risk assessment to identify potential legal vulnerabilities and mitigate exposure to legal risks in dynamic environments. By closely monitoring regulatory changes, market conditions, and geopolitical developments, I anticipate legal challenges that may arise during crises and implement preemptive measures to protect the organisation’s interests.  

Our legal strategy is tightly integrated with the broader business strategy to ensure alignment and synergy in navigating uncertainties. We work collaboratively with cross-functional teams, including senior management, operations, finance, and risk management, to develop a comprehensive crisis management framework that incorporates legal considerations into strategic decision-making processes.  

 

What are the main cases or transactions you have been involved in recently?  

In terms of M&A deals, I have played a pivotal role in structuring and negotiating the transactions in which we have been involved. Through comprehensive due diligence, contract drafting, and risk assessment, we have navigated complex legal challenges and aimed to expand our portfolio of luxury properties while enhancing our market presence.   

On the operational front, I have been instrumental in developing robust legal frameworks to streamline day-to-day hotel operations and ensure adherence to regulatory requirements. By providing guidance on labour law matters, contract management, guest disputes, and vendor agreements, we have optimised operational efficiency, minimised legal risks, and upheld the highest standards of service excellence across our properties.  

In the realm of land acquisition, I have led the legal team in securing strategic parcels of land for the development of new hotel projects in prime locations. By conducting thorough title searches, negotiating land purchase agreements, and obtaining the necessary permits and approvals, we facilitated seamless transactions that laid the foundation for future growth and expansion in key markets.  

Amidst organisational restructuring initiatives, I spearheaded the legal aspects of talent management, employment law compliance, and restructuring plans to optimise team dynamics and align organisational structures with strategic objectives. By implementing tailored legal strategies to navigate employee transitions, performance management, and organisational realignment, we fostered a culture of agility, innovation, and collaboration within the organisation.  

One of the most rewarding projects I have been involved in recently is the launch of the Rosewood Mandarina hotel from the ground up. By coordinating with external counsel, local authorities, and internal stakeholders, we have navigated legal complexities, secured the necessary permits, and orchestrated a flawless opening that will establish Rosewood Mandarina as a premier destination for travellers.  

   

How do you manage and motivate your legal team to ensure high performance and professional growth?  

As General Counsel, I foster a culture of excellence and growth within my team by providing mentorship, setting clear goals, and recognising achievements. Through regular feedback sessions, training opportunities, and professional development initiatives, I empower team members to expand their skills, take on new challenges, and achieve their full potential.  

By encouraging collaboration, celebrating successes, and fostering a supportive work environment, I cultivate a motivated and high-performing legal team that is committed to delivering exceptional results and advancing their careers within the organisation.
