Can you tell us about your journey to becoming an in-house counsel? What inspired you to pursue a career in this field?
Ever since I was a teenager, I wanted to become an attorney, however, not as most of my peers, my goal was never to be a criminal or litigious attorney. My goal was to be in-house counsel of international companies that touches everyday life or makes a difference in people’s life’s.
In your role as an in-house counsel, what are the main responsibilities and tasks you handle on a day-to-day basis?
Regulatory, commercial and product legal advice for the business in Mexico and + 30 LATAM and Caribbean countries.
What are some of the key challenges you have faced as a rising star in-house counsel, and how have you overcome them?
Besides the diverse legal advice needed and regulations, I believe that the main challenge as in-house counsel is to become a trusted advisor and a business partner.
As in-house counsel, it is needed not only to frame yourself as an attorney and know the corresponding regulation, you need knowledge of the business, its goals, risk appetite of the company etcetera so we can advise properly and give an extra that outside counsel cannot.
Working as one team and willingness to learn and adapt is essential to overcome any obstacle.
What steps have you taken to enhance your professional development and expand your legal skill set?
Always try to keep on learning and never lose curiosity.
