Can you tell us about your journey to becoming an in-house counsel? What inspired you to pursue a career in this field?
My journey started after obtaining my MBA degree. Before my studies, I had worked in law firms. Once I graduated, I decided to go in a different direction and become an in-house counsel.
While working in the law firm, I interacted with many companies in complex transactions, but it was not until I started my studies that I noted in depth the intricacies of running a business. Then is when I realised I wanted to be more involved with the clients I used to work for.
In your role as an in-house counsel, what are the main responsibilities and tasks you handle on a day-to-day basis?
I still get to work in interesting transactions consisting of real estate and private equity investments. It starts with gathering the relevant information and outlining the challenges and opportunities of moving forward.
Setting up the structure for the deal in question is crucial to understand the legal implications and to define the appropriate vehicles to pursue the deal. However, the acquisition of a property or investment in a company is only the beginning.
When it comes to real estate projects. I am involved in making sure everything is ready on the legal side to start developing, commercialising, and managing the property. That means drafting contracts, negotiating them, and making sure they are being fulfilled.
Effective teamwork is essential to align legal aspects with business goals. I get to work with different areas of the company from the conception of a project to its materialisation, throughout the life of the investment.
What are some of the key challenges you have faced as a rising star in-house counsel, and how have you overcome them?
In a company, sometimes people do not speak or understand legal terms, and the reasons to do things in a certain way. Still, practical solutions are needed. I have improved my interactions with other colleagues by making sure I am properly conveying the concept and the solution.
I have also come to realise that meeting the company’s objectives and mitigating risks are rarely exclusive. By streamlining processes and effectively managing the resources at hand, I have managed to meet deadlines without compromising the position of the company. I am never afraid of making a hard stop, but to do so I first make certain that all other options have been exhausted.
What steps have you taken to enhance your professional development and expand your legal skill set?
I am committed to continuous growth. Attending seminars, workshops, and industry events keeps me up-to-date with new trends and regulations.
Throughout my career, I have had the chance to interact with seasoned professionals who have contributed to my perspective and helped me improve my skills. The role of an in-house counsel is continuously evolving. It is important to keep that in mind.
