Can you tell us about your journey to becoming an in-house counsel? What inspired you to pursue a career in this field?

I had the opportunity to study for my Masters of Law at Pennsylvania State University, focusing on energy law. Since then, I have gained valuable professional experience working at major law firms and international companies in the energy sector.

In your role as an in-house counsel, what are the main responsibilities and tasks you handle on a day-to-day basis? 

I am responsible for the contracting area, in Mexico, for one of the most important energy infrastructure companies in the world. My responsibilities include the negotiation, validation, amendment, and approval of different agreements, including but not limited to EPC contracts, master services and material agreements for the construction of pipelines, interconnections, services and facilities governed by US and Canadian laws applicable in Latin America.

What are some of the key challenges you have faced as a rising star in-house counsel, and how have you overcome them? 

I believe that our legal framework in the oil and gas sector is over-regulated, so there are many challenges to be faced in this respect. Moreover, the main EPCs are foreign companies used to contracting under foreign legislation. It is a challenge to make these foreign legal structures applicable to the Mexican framework.

What steps have you taken to enhance your professional development and expand your legal skill set? 

The importance of understanding the technical side of the business is crucial to success on the legal side. I am committed to working closely with the technical and project teams to develop these skills, to learn which battles to fight and which are best left alone.
