What are the most significant cases or transactions that your legal team has recently been involved in?
This year has been exceptionally busy for my team and me, as we have been deeply involved in several M&A and corporate reorganisation projects. Notably, we advised on the divestiture of a business line specialising in transaction data management and fraud detection services for merchants, with the transaction valued at approximately USD 600 million.
On the commercial front, my team has played a crucial role in preparing agreements and developing legal strategies for the launch of new products. We have also revised agreements to improve and update existing products. These tasks extend beyond drafting and negotiation; they involve close collaboration with the Consumer Protection Bureau in Mexico, as our agreements are registered with and subject to the oversight of this authority.
Additionally, we have been engaged in a significant project concerning the dissolution and liquidation of our banking entity in Mexico. My team has been specifically responsible for devising a strategy to manage and, where possible, resolve all existing litigation involving the bank. This effort aims to ensure compliance with the liquidation schedule while maintaining the capacity to meet any obligations arising from the resolution of these cases.
Could you share an example of a time when you came up with an innovation that improved how your legal team works and did not come at a large expense?
While I wouldn’t necessarily label it as innovation—since it’s a common practice in many organisations—I have found that reducing the frequency of remote meetings in favour of regular face-to-face team meetings significantly enhances efficiency, especially in the post-pandemic era. I joined American Express during the COVID-19 pandemic, a time when our legal team operated entirely remotely. Although remote meeting technology is impressive, the lack of in-person interaction began to negatively affect the team. Even after returning to the office, many meetings continued to be held digitally. By prioritising in-person meetings, we have noticed a considerable boost in both performance and team morale.
What is a cause, business related or otherwise, that you care about, and why?
Gender diversity and equality, particularly within the legal profession, is a cause to which I am deeply committed. The legal field must undergo substantial changes to fully embrace the contributions of colleagues of all genders. Although notable progress has been made, the work of female and non-binary colleagues remains undervalued, and they are underrepresented in positions of authority. While some organisations support this cause, these initiatives are often predominantly championed by women or non-binary individuals. It is crucial to acknowledge that the active participation and contributions of male attorneys are essential for advancing this cause and achieving meaningful transformation in the legal environment.
Throughout my professional career, especially during my tenure at American Express, I have had the privilege of working with exceptionally talented female attorneys. These colleagues have shaped my understanding of the role of legal counsel, the skills necessary for success, and the specific challenges they have faced and overcome. I believe that a more diverse and equitable legal landscape will benefit every lawyer and organisation, fostering an environment that rewards ability and substance rather than perpetuating bias and prejudice.
