Can you tell us a bit about the work that you do and your professional journey?
I joined Xiaomi Group’s Legal Department in 2021, and I am responsible for Xiaomi’s legal affairs in Latin America. Together with my partner Mr Rafeal Lopez, we have gradually set up Xiaomi’s legal team and system in Latin America. At the same time, we gradually built up a team of in-house lawyers covering Mexico, Chile, Colombia and Peru. I came to Latin America with Xiaomi, and I witnessed the continuous growth of Xiaomi in Mexico and other Latin American countries, and the continuous deepening of the local compliance work.
I have been deeply involved in Xiaomi’s compliance projects in various countries, including but not limited to labour, consumer, privacy, product, GR(governmental relationship) and other areas. I have also been involved in commercial contracts and dispute resolution between Xiaomi and various key local customers in Latin America. We achieved localised delivery in various countries with key operators and clients such as America Moil Group.
As an in-house lawyer, my work is not only about legal-related professional issues, but I also have a large number of in-house functions especially the integration of internal team. Together with Xiaomi, I am constantly learning about different cultures and ways of working with our colleges from different countries. For us, in order to better realise Xiaomi’s strong commitment to local customers and local consumers, and to better understand and explore the local market and the local operation, we can’t do it without the professional support and help of our excellent and passional local teams.
Comprehension, respect, tolerance and learning are the core values of our team. As our team has colleagues from different countries in Latin America, we are adapting to each other’s ways of working and cultural differences, especially from the China headquarters directly to the local offices in Latin America. I speak Spanish, English and Chinese, and I’m also learning Portuguese. I am the cog and lubricant for these differences within the Xiaomi team, and I am trying to promote and facilitate mutual understanding and efficient communication between the HQ and local teams. I am trying to be a bridge between China and the various Latin American countries.
For Xiaomi, we are a young Chinese technology company. We are a global company, but we still have a long, long way to go. In the last five years, we’ve been going from China to the world, and now we’re going from the world to Latin America. We value and believe in the potential and future of the Latin American market. That’s why we have established local entities in these countries to achieve localised operations, even if there are high compliance costs, but we want to show our customers and consumers, and all our employees, Xiaomi’s determination and perseverance to put down roots and deepen its roots in Latin America.

At a time when protectionism, trade barriers and populism are on the rise, we, as an international company, are not only selling our products, but we are also using our little power to promote cultural exchange and respect and understanding between people. Each one of us is a force for pushing the walls down.
