What are the most significant cases or transactions that your legal team has recently been involved in?
In general terms, our team is focused on supporting the business growth across Latam which for digital companies includes learning how to navigate through complex regulations. I am also actively involved in advancing regional discussions regarding taxation of digital services. Keeping up with changes in tax laws and ensuring compliance of regulations can be complex and challenging!
Could you share an example of a time when you came up with an innovation that improved how your legal team works and did not come at a large expense?
Working in a digital company poses unique challenges. Being able to operate cross border without physical presence entails learning to navigate through regulatory complexities and policies that are everchanging. Embracing the adoption of AI tools to boost team efficiency is something I’m convinced will be crucial for legal & tax departments in the next years especially when working through multiple jurisdictions where you have no physical presence. The adoption of technology and AI our day to day will push many of us outside of our comfort zones but I believe will be key to successful and profitable legal & tax departments. This is something we are trying to implement in our day-to-day routine and which has proven effective once you invest time to it.
What is a cause, business related or otherwise, that you care about, and why?
As a dad myself, I care deeply about gender equality at work, in particular paid family leave for both birthing and non-birthing parents. Becoming a parent changes your life and we still have much work to do in Mexico in terms of gender equality for both parents in the professional market. For me, this starts with offering paid leave for non-birthing parents which is something that until recently was almost inexistent in Mexico. As employees, I believe this is something we should all push for, and I encourage people to favour companies that provide these types of benefits over those who don’t. Companies will always want to recruit the best talent, so prioritising companies who adopt these policies will be key for making changes in the market.
