Attracted by the high growth potential in Mexico’s e-commerce market, with estimated annual growth rates of approximately 30%, Amazon launched its operation in the country in 2015. Today Amazon operates a Spanish language site, Amazon.com.mx, featuring millions of products spanning a range of consumer goods. The Mexican legal unit was created immediately on Amazon’s entry into the market by Ben Gaffney, a lawyer with substantial previous in-house and private practice experience in the US. Gaffney’s high managerial capacity ensured the swift formation of a dynamic legal team that is known for an atmosphere of efficiency, respect and discipline that ensures excellent results. Supporting Amazon’s newly formed logistics infrastructure in Mexico, which includes a regional distribution centre, Gaffney’s team provides hands-on advice that ensures all legal and compliance requirements for the sale of products are met. Competing against other leading e-commerce companies in the region, such as MercadoLibre, Walmart and Inditex, Amazon has prioritised hiring the best in the industry, with seasoned professionals such as Gloria Canales, formerly the managing director of major apparel internet retailer Dafiti, recently joining the company. The same strategy has been mirrored in the legal department, which has hired several leading Mexican lawyers, including Ana Piedra Calderón, former general counsel at Cinemex.
