Bayer has been present in Mexico for almost 100 years, operating in the country since 1921. With over 3,150 employees and annual sales of more than MXN$18bn, the Mexican subsidiary is an important part of the Bayer consortium worldwide. With a presence throughout the country, the legal team is dispersed across Mexican cities such as Guadalajara and Monterrey along with the production plants located in several states. The team is led by general counsel and chief compliance officer Marco Antonio Rivas Gonzalez, who is described by peers as ‘an excellent lawyer with a strong command of company law as well as proven leadership and team coordination skills’. Under his leadership the legal team has been dedicated to the company’s work in the area of research, development and dissemination of science, assisting on all legal processes involved. Most recently the team has helped with its business portfolio focusing exclusively on life sciences and the most critical business units in Mexico addressing challenges surrounding pharmaceutical, consumer health, animal health and crop science from doctors, farmers, veterinarians and consumers. The legal team has overseen parts of an important block of services called “Country Platform”, responsible for providing raw materials, personnel services and infrastructure to the business units, while adding a crucial element of transparency to activities.
