Founded in 1995, Evercore is an US investment banking advisory that handles assets under management of approximately $2.6bn. Following a recent company restructure, the size of the Mexican legal team has been reduced from eight members to six. ‘This implies an important reduction in our team, increasing the responsibilities for the current members’, according to general counsel and compliance officer Sylvia Martinez. Martinez also adds, ‘the legal team is currently formed by a small group of individuals that assume a responsibility and accomplish it, giving better results than those expected‘. Significant recent activities for the team include facilitating the successful IPO of Javer on the Mexican Stock Exchange in January 2016, overseeing successful follow-on offerings for RHL Properties and IEnova, and work for FIBRA Dahnos regarding the issuance of a long term debt worth over $200m. The legal function at Evercore México is known in the market for its exceptional ability in the area of compliance. With the help of team member Carlos César Cardenas Sánchez who works closely with the sector’s regulators and authorities, the company has on several occasions been awarded as ‘the first compliance broker dealer’ as a result of a 100% response rate on time for anti-money laundering letter requests by the Comisión Nacional Bancaria y de Valores, Mexico’s financial regulator. On the achievement Martinez says, ‘the tangible impact is made in the day-to-day business. Being considered by CNBV as fully compliant implies that the compliance and legal procedures are always taken care of, notwithstanding the changes in the company’. Mexico’s financial body in charge of protecting and defending consumers of financial services, CONDUSEF (Comisión Nacional para la Protección y Defensa de los Usuarios de Servicios Financieros) have also qualified the company as full compliance broker dealers on a number of recent occasions following the team’s implementation of amendments in Mexican financial law.
