The Mexican subsidiary of global Spanish bank Banco Santander, has been established since 1991. Within the company’s legal department is the Legal Global Business team, led by executive legal director Juan Llanos. Handling part of the company’s corporate work, the team was central to the IPO of Grupo Financiero Santander México (GFSM) shares in Mexico and the US – the latter New York Stock Exchange placement being the biggest in Latin America in 2012, and in the top three globally. In 2016, the Legal Global Business team again played a crucial role in the offering of GFSM’s Perpetual Subordinated Non-Preferred Contingent Convertible Additional Tier 1 Capital Securities, listed on the Global Exchange Market of the Irish Stock Exchange and with subjection to the regulations of the New York Stock Exchange. In the same year, the team also incorporated a new banking institution, Banco S3 México, S.A., Institución de Banca Múltiple, as a subsidiary of Banco Santander (Spain). To manage their burgeoning workload the team has recently grown to 16 members, adding to their talent pool. Llanos singled out the work of Martha Rios and Pilar Olmedo, for their work in preparing and reviewing documents relating to agreements and IPOs . The team continues to gain a closer working relationship with business units and the c-suite, priding itself on an ethos of ‘working as a team and rendering our best service to Santander’s business areas’, according to Llanos.
