The members of the IEnova legal team is recognised as leading lawyers in the natural resources sector and as excellent business enablers. Vice president and general counsel René Buentello Carbonell leads by example, as a vastly experienced individual with over 13 years in the field and a particular expertise in natural resources. He was responsible for creating the legal department for the public company and his trajectory within the company started after Sempra, a Fortune 500 company, bought the assets of Grupo el Paso in 2010 whilst he was serving there as the commercial and business development director. Buentello Carbonell agreed to join the acquiring company as general counsel. In 2013 Sempra Mexico changed its corporate name to IEnova and one year later Buentello Carbonell was appointed vice president and general counsel reporting directly to the president and CEO. Since then the legal team has been responsible for obtaining excellent ratings from Mexico’s Security and Banking Commission, a great accomplishment for a highly regulated company such as IEnova. 2016 proved to be a highly eventful and successful year for the company, seeing a number of transactions and firsts for the company. Some projects the team facilitated include the completed 2016 acquisition of Ventika wind generation facilities in Mexico, totalling $900m. The company was also awarded its first two solar energy projects in Mexico in September 2016 and was also approved to acquire Pemex’s stake in a joint venture. The company went on to buy Mexico’s biggest wind farm from Blackstone and continue to plan large-scale investments on eight projects in 2017, the legal team has enabled this expansion and continue to contribute to promoting the company’s stance on growth, competitiveness and sustainable development within the country.
