About

Led by Reinaldo Ameri, vice president legal for Mexico, global insurance group MetLife’s Mexico legal team – which contains 25 lawyers and non-lawyers – is structured into four pillars, each of which are led by individual legal heads. The corporate and contracts pillar is led by Mauricio Andrade, litigation is led by Nicolás Vega Olmos, bids and products led by Gabriel Hernandez; and the privacy pillar is led by Alejandra Aceves. The highly capable legal, regulatory and privacy professionals that make up the team are known for their flexibility covering the complex and often volatile insurance market. They provide support in legal and compliance matters handling over 1,500 agreements, 200 corporate acts, and a lawsuits portfolio of over 3,000 cases whilst handling over 100 bidding processes. MetLife Mexico´s legal team has been a key participant to the implementation of MetLife’s new corporate strategy, with an active role to provide legal advice on the different initiatives. The legal department is constantly involved in approaching new business and product structures. The work requires a hugely detailed knowledge of the local regulatory environment. MetLife Mexico´s legal team conducted a thorough review of the litigation portfolio including more than 3,000 lawsuits and created strong partnerships with other areas of the company with the objective to put customers first and keeping litigation only where reasonably needed. In addition, the legal team introduced a new mind-set and a new way of doing things, becoming a fully digital team by implementing different digital tools to manage day to day activities which simplifies the communication with clients, making processes easier to handle by the legal team and reinforcing internal communication. Among the most important matters MetLife Mexico’s legal has been involved in, the team recently obtained a favourable ruling as the Supreme Court of Justice cleared the company of any liability on a joint liability on medical malpractice. This ruling does not only have a strong impact for MetLife Mexico but for the insurance sector as a whole. In addition, it successfully executed and completed the sales process of MetLife Afore to Principal Financial Group. Ameri explains that the team ‘executed comprehensive reviews and enhancements of MetLife’s different business structures, creating strong relations with business partners to succeed together not only from a business perspective but also creating comprehensive legal compliance structures, mitigating any legal and regulatory risks’.
