The in-house legal team at Philip Morris Mexico, (PMM) one of the world’s largest tobacco and smoking product companies, is made up of five lawyers and is led by Jorge Dengo Rosabal, senior counsel Mexico. Since the beginning of 2018, the PMM law department structurally re-organised and became a project based organisation meaning lawyers do not have pre-assigned areas to support. Instead, any lawyer can give support to any area or project team. Rosabal identifies that, ‘with this new way of working we are improving the efficiency of the internal resources by the distribution of the workload, we are reducing time of response to our business partners, encouraging learning among the team members, as well as giving them space to deliver in their day-to-day’. In this regard, the team developed “CoDe” (Counseling on Demand), a legal space that allows users to submit their legal queries, obtain pre-filled templates for their day-to-day operations, have access to the legal archive and consult corporate documents of PMM legal entities to obtain answers to frequently asked questions. Rosabal adds that, ‘focus areas are still led by one lawyer, but for the day-to-day, CoDe will work as a “legal clinic” that helps to enrich lawyers’ business acumen’. The legal team has also been working on Mexican tobacco regulatory law to strengthen the role of smokeless tobacco products in the Mexican market in line with the global company’s ambitious target of ceasing to sell traditional tobacco products altogether.
