What are the most significant cases or transactions that your legal team has recently been involved in?

Recently, me and my team have been active, participating in multiple significant cases for our company. In 2018, we took part in the acquisition of 80% of Cable Onde, the largest cable provider in Panama, and in June 2022, we exercised our right to acquire the remaining 20%, giving us full ownership of our Panama operation. In 2019, we acquired Telefonica’s business in both Nicaragua and Panama, and in 2021, we acquired the minority interest of our Guatemala operation for US$2.2bn, becoming full owners of that operation. Furthermore, we have recently completed a rights offering to our shareholders, as well as working on a carve out of both our mobile financial services business and tower business.

How important is choosing to work with external lawyers who align with your company’s values? Are you likely to reconsider what firms you work with based on this?

At Millicom, we always strive to do things the right way and it is imperative that our external lawyers align with the values of our company, in order to build a more trusting and efficient relationship.

In general, what would you like to see change about the external law firms you use? Examples could be greater flexibility in billing, a more expansive suite of services offered, more transparency in reporting ESG statistics etc.

From my personal experience, I would like to see greater flexibility in billing and caps on hourly rate increases.
