Eyad Yousef Jaber has been in place as general counsel at Gulf Specialized Works since 2015, after ‘learning and acquainting myself with all disciplines of law’ through a successful period at respected law firms in Jordan. His innovations within the company’s legal team have been mainly in the areas of labour law, contract management and dispute resolution. For the former, Jaber says, ‘I have instituted new guidelines in the administration of labour issues in order to mitigate labour disputes within the guidelines of the Saudi labour law. Since Saudi Arabia is dependent on expatriate labour, I ensured that prior to entering into an agreement with the labour provider, he must be familiar with Saudi labour law’. The area of contract management, Jaber says, consumed the majority of his time: ‘I found certain problems in managing the contractual aspect of projects. Certain correspondence with the client were ignored or not responded to in a timely manner. I had meetings with the department heads and explained the negative consequences of ignoring correspondence, and requested that I must be copied on all correspondence related to the contractual aspect of the project. These improvements have helped the company to maintain current information on all projects and report the situation in a timely manner to the company’s senior management’. Jaber also has been involved in interesting dispute work, including an International Chamber of Commerce arbitration with an international EPC contractor.
