Legal director | Vodafone Qatar
Ian Quigley
Legal director | Vodafone Qatar
General counsel | The Damovo Group
Ian Quigley has enjoyed an impressive rise at Vodafone Group since 2009. ‘Looking to gain international experience’, he moved within the Group from Vodafone Ireland to Vodafone Qatar in 2013, and within one year he was made head of legal. Merely three years after this, in 2017, he assumed his current position as legal director. He considers this to be among his main career highlights: ‘My current role is challenging and allows me to test and develop my skills more consistently at a higher level. It has also required me to develop a broader range of skills outside of pure technical legal capability. My leadership skills and my ability to influence and advise at all levels of the business up to board level have had to evolve and develop within the role and are of particular importance in this context’. Speaking more broadly on how proud he is to work for a globally recognised company such as Vodafone, as well as the personal career growth this gives him, Quigley says, ‘Being afforded the opportunity to work for a globally recognised brand such as Vodafone has provided me with a unique environment to grow and develop as a legal professional. Vodafone Group operates as a global legal community which facilitates knowledge sharing in respect of key market issues impacting its operating companies and ensures that all lawyers within Vodafone Group have access to the latest technological innovations in the legal field’. Quigley has also made tangible internal improvements to the in-house legal function at Vodafone Qatar. ‘Given the fast-paced nature of the telecommunications industry, Vodafone Qatar is continually required to evolve its business and its areas of commercial focus to ensure it keeps pace with a rapidly changing global environment. As a result, the Vodafone Qatar legal team has also had to evolve. Over the last 12 months, the Vodafone Qatar legal team has upskilled considerably to facilitate the delivery of commercial agreements in more specialised areas; for example, the legal team has concluded several agreements with regional and international content providers designed to expand Vodafone Qatar’s offering in this space,’ Quigley reports.
