Since his appointment in 2015 as Qatar Financial Centre Authority (QFCA’s) chief legal officer, Nasser Al-Taweel has restructured the company’s legal operations to build an award winning well-respected legal team. ‘I have delivered on a critical need to employ and lead a number of lawyers with the right chemistry including technical experience, superior soft skills and a positive attitude through personally recruiting each and every lawyer within the team’, he explains when discussing how he has achieved this. ‘The team’s accolades are a testament to my success in this strategy’. The International Swaps and Derivatives Association has recently recognised Qatar Financial Centre (QFC) as an effective netting regime and published a positive legal opinion to its members, recognising the QFC as a netting-friendly jurisdiction, making it the only jurisdiction in Qatar to receive such a recognition from the well-respected organisation, a project which Al-Taweel oversaw and views as one of his most important recent achievements. ‘I have also supervised the enactment of professional codes of conduct for lawyers and accountants contributing to standards of professional excellence at the QFC’, Al-Taweel continues. Simultaneous to this, his overarching goal has been to maintain the very high standards he and his legal team have set for themselves within QFCA. ‘My priority has been to keep my team motivated to continue performing at the highest levels’, he explains. ‘I have done this by challenging each of them to become involved in new areas of expertise in an inclusive environment where all QFCA legal members feel valued and comfortable to share views on all aspects of the department’.
