Looking forward, what technological advancements do you feel will impact the role of in-house legal teams in the future the most?
As in-House counsel, we deal daily with optimisation, management and mitigation of risk. Driving the culture of informed and balanced risk taking becomes a habit impeded in our DNA, whereby the term zero risk does not exist in any business field. Therefore, I believe that technological advancement in risks assessment and approach will have huge impact on our role.
What is a cause, business related or otherwise, that you care about, and why?
Being able to support patients to have access to medicines is what I really care about.
What would you say are the unique qualities required to be successful as an in-house lawyer in your industry?
Being a truly business partner that understands the business dynamics, challenges and opportunities is the key element for succeeding as an in-house lawyer. Building trust and being approachable to all stakeholders are the essential enablers for such success. Through closely partnering with the business and delivering strategic, risk-balanced, proactive, timely, and collaborative legal expertise and support.
What can law firms do to improve their service to the legal department?
Legal opinions and support provided by external counsel shall be based on the fundamental of ‘how to make things happen’, rather than only sharing the local laws and regulations. In-house counsel seek support mainly regarding the practical approach as well as what the alternatives are. I always look to ensure we enforce the business objectives, in line with the parameters of laws and regulations.
