Looking forward, what technological advancements do you feel will impact the role of in-house legal teams in the future the most?
The use of artificial intelligence (AI) is constantly increasing, and its increased use will empower lawyers to acquire knowledge much faster and expand their knowledge and expertise bandwidth. This will allow for the further leveraging of their intellectual powers, in order to provide their customers with better solutions and focus on the right missions.
What is a cause, business related or otherwise, that you care about, and why?
“People development” is my cause and purpose. I believe that if we put “people development” at the centre of everything we do, that our success, productivity, efficiency, and creativity will increase to a higher level, and everyone will benefit in a very sustainable way.
What would you say are the unique qualities required to be successful as an in-house lawyer in your industry?
It is crucial for an in-house lawyer to appreciate the vulnerability of the self and of others, and to truly care about their team. They must also be business oriented and commercially savvy, as well as being an innovative, forward thinker.
What can law firms do to improve their service to the legal department?
Law firms need to adjust their business model to fit the customers’ business needs. They must develop the mindset of being a business partner, rather than simply an external counsel. This will not only strengthen the relationship with customers, but also support sustainable and profitable growth. This shift will come with its risks, but it will bring huge value to everyone on the table.
