Looking forward, what technological advancements do you feel will impact the role of in-house legal teams in the future the most?
Blockchain technologies.
What is a cause, business related or otherwise, that you care about, and why?
Diversity and Inclusion in business and in life. Harmonious but diverse teams produce better results. In life, I want my children to live in the world where people are judged on who they are as people and not on their gender, race, ethnicity, or religion.
What would you say are the unique qualities required to be successful as an in-house lawyer in your industry?
The ability to listen, connect with people and anticipate risks and opportunities
What can law firms do to improve their service to the legal department?
Meet regularly with clients to understand their challenges, think out of the box and proactively propose ideas that might address the issues the client faces. In-house lawyers are often too overworked to think creatively. Extinguishing one fire after another, we sometimes might miss opportunities for making small changes that can have a big impact on our work. The law firms that think beyond legal opinions and litigation, in my opinion, will have an edge. That said, first get the basics right – responsiveness, timely and relevant advice are a foundation, if you can’t do that right the rest is not relevant.
