Looking forward, what technological advancements do you feel will impact the role of in-house legal teams in the future the most?
I can see that with easy access to information, legal research efficiency will significantly improve. That is extremely helpful for in-house teams operating around the globe, where legal information may not be as easily accessible in every jurisdiction. In addition, developing internal legal work management systems, document retention, and contract management software allows for more consistency in the in-house team’s legal advice.
What is a cause, business-related or otherwise, that you care about, and why?
I believe in empowering young talent, allowing them an opportunity to develop and operate in a nurturing environment. I was fortunate to be in such an environment which allowed me to progress in my career. Such values would greatly enhance a company’s growth opportunity, as a whole, and the legal teams in particular.
What would you say are the unique qualities required to be successful as an in-house lawyer in your industry?
In-house counsel must recognise that they have an important role to play within the company. Thus, in-house counsel’s knowledge of the business and their companies’ industry allows them to better understand the client’s needs. In addition, an in-house counsel may assume more roles within the company that may go beyond the limitation of the legal scope. Therefore, an internal lawyer must always be prepared to face such special assignments.
What can law firms do to improve their service to the legal department?
Law firms must recognise that clients are looking for legal support that aids the management of their businesses. Thus, a law firm close to the industry recognises all risks, which are not limited to legal aspects but also extend to commercial, political and reputational risks, and tends to provide the most valuable advice. Also, dedicating a few team members from a law firm would build the relationship with the in-house team and allows for more harmony in splitting the legal work between the external and internal resources.
