Looking forward, what technological advancements do you feel will impact the role of in-house legal teams in the future the most?
In my view, blockchain, digital transactions and cryptocurrencies will impact the role of in-house legal teams in the future. It is expected that new regulations will continue to be introduced, and legal teams should understand, monitor and implement the new legal mechanisms and related regulations.
What is a cause, business-related or otherwise, that you care about, and why?
I launched and chaired the MENAT Working Families Network (WFN), a business resource group focusing on all aspects of family life, and I also recently became the co-chair of WFN for EMEA. WFN supported employees during the pandemic period while working from home. Support was given for childcare, elderly parents, managing work remotely, and other challenges faced in an unprecedented environment. MENAT WFN organised several events in the region, including a step challenge, meditation and coaching sessions on embracing change, helping kids with bullies, cybersecurity awareness for kids and adults, presentation skills for teenagers, a nutritional chat for children, ongoing circles with MDs on relevant topics, including remote working.
What would you say are the unique qualities required to be successful as an in-house lawyer in your industry?
In my view, in addition to technical skills, an in-house lawyer should focus on providing exceptional services to internal and external clients by executing with the highest standards of performance and ensuring that risk is managed effectively. An in-house lawyer should act and think like an owner and a partner. In addition, the in-house role requires a commitment to integrity and fairness and building a great team by promoting teamwork and loyalty and encouraging constructive challenges.
What can law firms do to improve their service to the legal department?
By working closely with the in-house legal team, it is important for law firms to understand the overall structure of their clients, products and services offered, business and commercial requirements and culture, as it will be crucial to provide practical advice tailored to the client’s needs.
