Could you share an example of a time when you came up with an innovation that improved how your legal team works and did not come at a large expense?
In January 2011, I was appointed as manager of Hawalli district prosecution office’ with the rank of chief public prosecutor. At that time, I was assigned by the attorney general to establish and lead the public prosecution office for media and information, which initially consisted of seven carefully selected prosecutors. We divided our responsibilities based on specialisation, with some handling printing and publishing crimes, others focusing on audio-visual crimes, and a group dealing with general matters. Despite our diverse areas of expertise, we maintained a collaborative and unified team dynamic. Overtime, the prosecution office has grown significantly, more than 40 prosecutors, due to the expansion of our jurisdiction through cybercrime laws and the inclusion of additional jurisdictions mandated by subsequent legislation.
How do you balance your responsibilities as a GC with your involvement in dispute resolution and M&A matters?
As general counsel at ABK, I oversee a team of lawyers and administrative staff, managing their daily activities and providing guidance. I also serve as an advisor to the bank on legal matters and participate in committees. Our legal division operates like a law firm, handling litigation, contracts, consultancy and execution. We handle customer disputes for both retail and corporate customers, delegating tasks based on expertise. We recently collaborated with external experts on a proposed merger, supervising and ensuring objectives were met. Our role was coordination and oversight, rather than direct handling.
What emerging technologies do you see as having the most significant impact on the legal profession in the near future, and how do you stay updated on these developments?
As General Counsel, I understand the importance of embracing technological advancements in the legal industry. AI, blockchain, and automation have the potential to reshape our profession and bring numerous benefits. AI can assist with legal research, contract analysis, and document review, increasing efficiency and accuracy. Blockchain technology provides enhanced security in transactions. Automation tools streamline administrative tasks. These technologies can improve collaboration and create a more efficient work environment. To stay updated, I prioritise continuous learning through webinars, seminars, and conferences. I engage with industry publications and participate in online forums. By incorporating these technologies effectively, we can deliver faster insights, better value to clients, and maintain a competitive edge.
How do you prioritise diversity and inclusion within your legal department, and what initiatives have you implemented to foster a more inclusive and equitable work environment?
ABK’s legal division is committed to diversity and inclusion within the workplace. This is achieved through various measures, starting with a fair and diverse recruitment process that actively mitigates unconscious bias. Ongoing training is provided on topics such as unconscious bias and cultural awareness to foster understanding and respect among team members. Employee resource groups have also been established to provide support and advocacy for underrepresented voices. Furthermore, feedback channels are in place for employees to express their perspectives and suggestions for improvement. Overall, ABK promotes an inclusive environment where every individual’s unique viewpoint is valued, leading to innovation and success.
