Mohammad Adnan Sharafi

Chief legal officer and board secretary | Abu Dhabi National Energy Company (TAQA)

About

Mohammad is a seasoned legal professional with extensive experience spanning the energy, industrial and financial sectors. Since July 2020, Mohammad has served as the Chief Legal Officer and Board Secretary of TAQA, one of the largest listed integrated utility companies in the Europe, Middle East and Africa region with a market cap of over USD$100bn, where he has played a pivotal role in supporting the transformation of the utility sector in Abu Dhabi and reshaping the strategy and policies of the organization across its operations in over 11 countries.

Before his time at TAQA, Mohammad’s career saw him serve as the General Counsel of Abu Dhabi Power Corporation (AD Power) and for over a decade in various roles within the legal function of Mubadala Investment Company, advising on significant public and private M&A transactions, utilities development projects, corporate restructurings and other transactions. He had also spent time in private practice working at Clifford Chance LLP’s offices in London and Dubai.

Mohammad established the group’s legal, governance ethics and compliance functions in his current role to support the organization’s growth and activities following the landmark merger between TAQA and AD Power. This effort included setting up the structure for the three functions, establishing their mandates, operating model, policies and procedures.

Over the last three years, the company has firmly established itself as the national low-carbon power and water champion, witnessed steady growth in its core utilities business, significantly improved its financial positioning (achieving and maintaining an investment-grade credit rating) and launched an ambitious strategy for domestic and international growth, underpinned by clear ESG targets.
