David Westmoreland
Group general counsel | Gulftainer
David is currently the group general counsel of Gulftainer, a global ports operator and logistics provider. He manages a multi-national team of lawyers across the Middle East and USA providing full service legal advice and oversight of enterprise risk to Gulftainer and its international subsidiaries.
David has twenty years of professional experience in delivering on-time, on-budget, multi-billion contracts across the Middle East, UK, USA and Asia. Prior to taking on his current role, David was based in Denver, USA working for Fortune 500 company, Ball Corporation where he provided strategic legal advice across a wide variety of matters including, M&A and joint ventures, international litigation and leading the corporation’s compliance with antitrust legislation, and international trade sanctions. Whilst in this role, he played a pivotal role in supporting Ball Corporation’s divestment of its Russia business and subsequent divestment of its Aerospace division to BAE Systems, both of which returned significant value to the corporation’s shareholders.
After beginning his career in London at Eversheds law firm, David’s move in-house was motivated by a desire to integrate more closely into the business and the opportunity of providing first-class legal advice within the context of facilitating the business’ strategic objectives. To this end, David is currently a member of Gulftainer’s executive committee and executive board with responsibility for setting and driving Gulftainer’s global business strategy. David has also held similar roles in Ball’s AMEA region which contained multiple manufacturing facilities from Turkey in the west, to Korea in the east, and Ball’s North and Central America region. In addition, David has significant experience of representing entities’ interests on joint venture boards across the Middle East and Asia.
David is a whole-hearted supporter of diversity and inclusion in the workplace and has consciously built and mentored legal teams that reflect this belief across multiple jurisdictions.
