Filippo Cossalter
Head of legal emerging markets, Italy and Israel | Johnson & Johnson
How do you approach managing legal aspects during periods of instability or crises, and how does your legal strategy align with the broader business strategy to ensure the organisation’s resilience?
Given my extensive experience in emerging markets, I’ve navigated numerous crises and instabilities. I believe that these turbulent times can present unique opportunities for growth and innovation. My approach is to foster a resilient legal strategy that aligns closely with broader business objectives. By empowering my team and ensuring they have the tools and knowledge to navigate challenges, we can maintain operational continuity and seize opportunities that may arise. Through effective communication, collaboration, and a proactive mindset, we can transform crises into catalysts for organisational success.
What are the main cases or transactions that you have been involved in recently?
Johnson & Johnson typically engages in global transactions, often tailored for Western markets. Our role involves adapting these deals to the specific nuances of emerging markets, ensuring compliance with local regulations and maximising value. Recently, we’ve expanded our focus to regional deals, allowing us to shape the transaction from the ground up to meet regional needs and aspirations. This approach requires a comprehensive understanding of local market dynamics, contract drafting, and antitrust considerations.
How have you integrated technology into your legal processes, and what impact has this had on efficiency and compliance?
Technology has become an indispensable tool in my legal practice. I utilise gen.AI-powered tools with tasks ranging from drafting emails (especially those that are more sensitive or can ‘touch me’) to generating presentation ideas and conducting legal research. In J&J we can leverage a closed AI tool, allowing us to safely deal with confidential information which could not be processed in the context of ‘open’ tools.
While the legal field is evolving rapidly, I believe that we are far behind …. Human thinking will remain critical, while by leveraging technology strategically, we can optimise our workflows and deliver exceptional results. I am excited to explore the next opportunities and tech. development.
What is a topic of business (or otherwise) that you are passionate about?
I am deeply passionate about people development. By identifying individuals’ unique skills, interests, and aspirations, I strive to match them with opportunities that align with both the company’s needs and goals.
This involves mentoring, coaching, providing opportunities for career advancement and facilitating access to growth-oriented projects. Investing in our people is not only a rewarding experience but also a strategic imperative for long-term success.
