Founded in 1997 as a joint-stock enterprise aimed at establishing and progressing Saudi natural mineral production, Ma’aden is now the largest mining company in Saudi Arabia. The business, 50% of which is traded on the Tadawul, has been highly successful in its endeavours, with 2015 revenue being reported as SAR 10.9bn. While Maaden has recently faced challenges related to commodity price fluctuations, the company is set to expand and diversify further, with the legal team key to these progressions. Recent developments include a reshuffle of the board of directors as part of government initiatives to reform the mining sector, and the culmination of a joint venture between Ma’aden and Canadian mining company Barrick Gold. This has seen production at their Jabal Sayid site begin in earnest, which will provide a new and lucrative revenue stream for the company via the large copper deposits found here. The legal team at Ma’aden has been at the forefront of these initiatives, overseen by their chief legal counsel, Stephen Bodley. A high-flier, Bodley was identified for his prodigious talent early on in his career, being named as one to watch in a ’40 under 40’ legal ranking, and provide the benefit of his experience at a number of large companies.
