Oman Power and Water Procurement Company (OPWP) is responsible for organising all procurement of water and electricity needs throughout the Sultanate of Oman. Given this broad and extremely important remit, the company usually maintains an active transaction profile, with the past year being no exception. Procurements of major independent power projects at the Ibri and Sohar IV facilities have been made, and expansion efforts have been made to existing large desalination plants at the Barka IV and Sohar III sites. These projects have been awarded to a range of suppliers, including French company Engie and Japanese company Sojitz, highlighting that the legal team at OPWP is required to be versatile and undertake negotiations with companies from diverse business climates and cultures. Andrew Rae is general counsel at OPWP, having taken on the role in 2014 after a successful career as a Partner at Trowers and Hamlins, and provides expert guidance and coordination to the team’s activities.
