With around 150 channels and distribution rights in over 20 countries, UAE-based Orbit Showtime Network (OSN) is the leading pay television network in the Middle East and North Africa. A legal team of 14 is charged with handling the range of regulatory, contractual and contentious issues that come with this wide geographical coverage. With the 2012 launch of online-TV platform OSN Play and OSN on Demand, the region’s first video on demand (VOD) service, the legal challenges of protecting intellectual property (IP) in a notoriously opaque region increased significantly for the company. The team has won particular praise for its efforts to support the expansion of these services by combatting piracy and counterfeiting. According to nominators, collaboration between OSN’s skilled anti-piracy and contract lawyers and content rights owners has helped the company to retain the regional distribution rights for some of the most popular international TV licences. The team has also had to deal with changes in senior leadership recently when the experienced and hugely respected Helena Samaha stepped down after five years leading the company’s legal function. Following Samaha’s departure, OSN’s GC and company secretary Sophie Moloney was promoted to the position of chief legal officer in August 2016 and will continue to oversee the legal team’s best-in-class regional IP strategy.
