2017 saw another set of landmark deals for Emirates – the Middle East’s largest airline – once again affirming its financial clout and huge importance to the Gulf economy and wider business community. Among other deals, in perhaps the most dramatic and eye-catching contract signed in the aviation world in recent years, the company announced in January 2018 a multi-billion dollar deal with Airbus for 20 A380 superjumbo jets and options on 16 more, in a move which many analysts believe may save the troubled Airbus airliner programme virtually single-handedly. In another of the blockbuster deals that have become synonymous with Dubai’s flagship airline, in November 2017 Emirates inked an approximately $15bn deal with Boeing for 40 787 Dreamliner aircraft, once again affirming its commitment to maintain the most cutting edge aircraft available in its fleet. Alongside overseeing the groundwork for these enormous capital outlays, the legal team deals with the intense day-to-day workload of an international airline legal team, which can provide challenges from an extremely wide variety of areas, all in one of the most publicly-exposed industries in the business world; poor customer service from staff or aviation incidents can make global news easily. For these and other reasons, the Emirates legal team is rightly renowned as one of the foremost operators in the Gulf.
