Founded in 1980 and based in Dubai, Emirates General Petroleum Corporation (EMARAT) has established a strong presence in the local markets for petroleum retailing, aviation refuelling, lubricants marketing, and terminal services. The legal department at the company run by general counsel Chehade Kahi, handles all legal matters and in some instances stepping in the commercial negotiations. Besides supervising the team members Kahi decides on the strategy of EMARAT’s claim in addition to drafting memos and submissions to the local courts. ‘The attendance is done by the legal unit at the Ministry of Justice who adopted our papers and submit them whenever required to the concerned authorities,’ Kahi explains. As EMARAT is one of the three government entities who are exclusively in charge of handling distribution of petroleum products in the UAE, the team actively supports joint ventures and partnerships with local and international oil players with regards to gas, LPG, oil, kerosene and more. The team has also impressed with its work on securing plane facilities in Dubai Airport and pipelines to transport various petroleum products. The legal team has provided legal support to these projects and all ancillary and supporting services, such as maintenance, retail, finance, HR and commercial among others.
