Frederick Leentfaar
Associate General Counsel, Data Protection | Meta
What are the projects that you are most proud of working on over the past 12 months?
I am part of the EU Data Protection Product Advisory team at Meta, where I cover among others privacy and data protection for our teen users. Over the past year I am proud to have worked on among others the launch of Teen Accounts on Instagram in the EU and the UK. Instagram Teen Accounts help teens stay connected to the people and things that matter the most, with built-in protections to give parents more peace of mind. With Instagram Teen Accounts, teens aged 13-17 are automatically placed in a protected experience, with built-in limits on who can contact them and the content they see.
What do you think sets you apart from other in-house counsel?
I am appreciated for my straightforward, risk-based approach and ability to translate legal risk in a clear and practical data protection steer for product development teams, quickly adjusting to ambiguity in an ever-changing legal and regulatory landscape.
What do you think are the most important attributes for a modern in-house counsel to possess?
A modern in-house counsel should have a deep understanding of the company’s products, services, and operations in order to provide practical and effective legal advice. They must be agile and able to anticipate and mitigate potential risks at an early stage, mindful of company objectives. This requires a proactive and positive approach to legal support.
In-house counsel must furthermore be able to communicate effectively and translate complex legal concepts into actionable guidance for non-legal stakeholders, while similarly be able to distill technical information into clear, concise language that resonates with various audiences.
